Gabriel Birch and Lloyd Durling
Soft Montage

Preview 13th December 6 - 9pm
14th - 16th December 12 - 6pm

Gabriel Birch and Lloyd Durling present Soft Montage – a collaborative
exhibition bringing together sculpture, installation and painting.

Soft Montage invites audiences to encounter the staged formations of
Birch’s sculpture set amid the textural landscapes of Durling’s paintings.
Whilst hinting at a sense of narrative or montage, the shifting modes of
representation and abstraction seek to unsettle the gallery space.

Birch’s multi-media sculptures assemble on the ground, intersecting with
the visitor’s path through the gallery. Sampled from mass-produced design
and public architecture, they propose an unnatural life in the utilitarian object.

Working with oil on paper, Durling’s paintings oscillate between expressive
play and control. The interplay of abstract shapes gives the illusion of a
collage or digital rendering, offering an interrogation of the painted form.

Despite these differing media, Soft Montage unites the artists’ shared focus
on hands-on materiality. Everyday encounters and recollections can be traced
within the works, inviting reflections on our participation within the urban
environment.
