Karen Fleming. Huts and Cuts. Review

Running from 3-5 November 2017, Huts and Cuts was the first solo exhibition by Edinburgh artist Karen Fleming. Like all the exhibitions hosted by DOK, it benefitted from the Steel Shed's unique backdrop.

Karen's current work is a representation of her own upbringing in the capital's housing schemes, where swing parks and other areas where children played became oases of games, laughter and adventure surrounded by the towering blocks of flats. Inspired by basic aspects of childhood wonder - glass jars enclosing wriggling tadpoles, a Tarzan swing, fishing in the Union Canal with sticks, adventure playgrounds, the simple joys of running around in circles - the paintings use bold colours, abstract shapes and textures to reflect the vibrancy and beauty to be found in even the most simplistic of activities and pleasures; particularly in areas of Edinburgh which have experienced social challenges.
