Opening tonight, Friday 29 September, at 7pm, Lewis's exhibition runs from Saturday 30 September until Monday 2 October, from 12-4pm in the Steel Shed at DOK.
The industrial backdrop of the shed and the docklands beyond is the perfect setting for this young artist's first solo exhibition. In many ways echoing aspects of last month's 'Locality', Lewis's work is a strong reflection of his own background in Central Scotland (specifically Falkirk/Fawkirk.) Typical with many artists from the nation's working class heartlands, he seeks to portray the complexities of communities that have been scarred by industrial decline and plagued by sectarianism, yet continue to emerge with positivity and a wider community spirit. He is also drawn to explore more ambiguous historical influences on Central Scottish culture, such as Masonic and Orange institutions. Lewis's work is underpinned by a rich seam of colloquial humour that would be recognisable to readers of Irvine Welsh's acerbic fiction, not to mention the irreverence of underground comics Viz and Electric Soup. As well as painting and installations he has previously self-designed gloriously anarchic 'Zines. This exhibition represents the latest in the continuing run of thought-provoking events being hosted at DOK. If you can make the opening, Lewis promises 'thur might be munchie boaxes.'
